xeyes-1.3.1

Introduction to xeyes

The xeyes package provides an application that displays a pair eyes which follow the XCURSOR in an X Window System environment.

Its usecase is rather limited. Even in its time, it was considered gimmicky. It got followed up by better programs that handled the premise better. The remaining usecase it fulfills nowadays is determining which GUI applications use Wayland or fall back to Xorg.

The xeyes application can only follow the cursor if it is found in an Xorg environment. The general Xorg server on Wayland is shared by Xwayland. When an application is running in it, xeyes is able to see the cursor when it hovers over the Xorg application. For Wayland applications and within the general environment, the cursor cannot be found at all. This allows for easy determination of what apps use Xorg. If you are just using Xorg, this package has been superceded by others. If you are using Wayland and want to see progress on Wayland support for various packages, this application will show if they are using Wayland or Xorg.
